EP 009: The Resistance Is Your Wisdom: Why Small Changes Can Feel Impossible

Jul 29, 2025
Courageous Pivot Podcast The Resistance Is Your Wisdom

What if your resistance to change isn't weakness, but wisdom trying to keep you safe? In this eye-opening episode, Meghan explores the fascinating concept of "immunity to change"—why even the smallest shifts can feel impossibly difficult, and why willpower alone isn't enough. Drawing from groundbreaking research by psychologists Robert Kegan and Lisa Lahey, she reveals how our unconscious "competing commitments" create an internal tug-of-war that sabotages our best intentions.

Through personal stories and practical examples, Meghan shows how to work with your resistance instead of against it, using gentle experiments to test the fears that keep you stuck. Whether you've been beating yourself up for not following through on micro-pivots, or you're curious why change feels so hard even when you genuinely want it, this episode offers a compassionate new framework for understanding your inner protective system.

Essential listening for anyone ready to stop fighting themselves and start creating sustainable change from a place of self-compassion.

This Week’s Exercise: The Resistance Reflection Practice

Purpose: To help you recognize where resistance is showing up, uncover the hidden beliefs behind it, and gently experiment with change in a way that honors your nervous system.

Step 1: Name the Change

  • What’s the shift you want to make?

  • It could be something small—a micro pivot you’ve been craving—or you can go all in with what you want most right now.

  • Write it down clearly.

 Step 2: Notice the Resistance

  • Now try to imagine the change actually happening.

  • What thoughts or feelings come up when you do?

  • Don’t push them away. Just notice. This is valuable information.

Step 3: Get Curious About the Hidden Commitment

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • What are you currently doing that works in direct conflict with this change?

  • What might you be protecting?

  • What identity are you holding onto that this change might threaten?

Step 4: Identify The Big Assumption

Now ask yourself:

What do I believe will happen if I follow through with this change?

  • Take it all the way to the end. What is the worst possible thing that could happen?

  • You might begin to see how wild or exaggerated that belief or assumption actually is.

 Step 5: Craft Your Experiment

Now create a tiny, manageable way to test the waters.

  • Something simple—like my “little craft experiment” or lunch with friends.

  • The goal is to gently challenge your assumptions without disrupting your entire life or overwhelming your system.

Step 6: Run It, Reflect, and Learn

Try the experiment. Then take a few moments to reflect:

  • What did you learn?

  • What surprised you?

  • What outcome might follow from this tiny shift?

You’re not aiming for perfection or success—just insight.

The data you gather here becomes the foundation for sustainable, aligned change.
