This Week’s Exercise: The Disillusionment Discovery Practice

Purpose:

To help you identify the illusions you may be unconsciously living by, examine their origins, and begin to replace them with truth, clarity, and aligned possibility.

 Step 1: Spot the Should

What’s a belief or expectation you’re living by that starts with “I should…”?

It might be subtle or loud. It might sound like:

  • “I should be further ahead by now.”

  • “I should want what I used to want.”

  • “I should stick with this because it worked before.”

Write down the most persistent or heavy “should” you’re carrying right now.

 Step 2: Trace the Origin

Now ask: Where did this should come from?

  • Who taught you this was true?

  • Was it modeled, rewarded, or assumed in your family, culture, or work?

Take a moment to name the origin without blame—just clarity.

 Step 3: Challenge the Illusion

Now ask yourself:
What if this belief was never actually true?

  • What opens up if you release it?

  • What feels scary about letting it go?

Notice any tension, resistance, or freedom that emerges. There’s wisdom in all of it.

Step 4: Choose a New Possibility

If that illusion no longer held power over you, what might you choose instead?

Write out a new belief or truth that feels more aligned, even if it’s just a whisper for now.

Example:

  • Old illusion: “Success means always being busy.”

  • New possibility: “Success can look like space, creativity, and joy.”

Step 5: Tiny Truth Test

Create a gentle, doable action that aligns with your new belief. This is your “truth test.”

Examples:

  • Take a walk in the middle of your workday—without guilt.

  • Say no to a project that feels performative.

  • Have a conversation where you tell the truth, even if your voice shakes.

Make it small. Make it real.

Step 6: Reflect and Recalibrate

After your truth test, take a few moments to reflect:

  • How did it feel?

  • Did any old fears show up?

  • What did you learn about yourself?

  • What might this mean for the next step of your journey?

You’re not looking for validation—you’re collecting evidence that truth feels better than illusion, even when it’s hard.

Final Note:

Each time you release an outdated belief, you reclaim more of who you really are. Disillusionment is not the end—it’s the opening.

Welcome the space it creates.
