EP 038: Ten Years Off Media: Finding Sovereignty Beyond the Narratives We're Fed with Melissa Om
Mar 30, 2026
Essential listening for anyone who has ever wondered whether the life they're living is truly theirs.
What if the noise you've learned to tune out is actually the very thing shaping every decision you make?
Melissa Om spent nearly 14 years as a television producer at CTV Montreal. She understood intimately how stories were made, how narratives were packaged, and how mass consent was manufactured one news cycle at a time. And then she walked away. Not just from her career, but from media entirely. News, movies, music with lyrics, Netflix, social media. All of it. That was ten years ago.
In this conversation, Melissa shares what happened when she stopped consuming the world's stories and started listening for her own. We talk about burnout as a portal, the courage it takes to go to Mongolia with a backpack and no plan, and what inner sovereignty actually feels like when the noise finally clears.
This one will stay with you.

Covered In This Episode
- What it actually looks like to build a career inside a media machine — and what you lose when your job is manufacturing the stories everyone else believes.
- The 2016 moment that cracked it open: when the anger rising in Melissa's body felt more truthful than anything she was watching on screen.
- Why stopping the news wasn't enough — and how that first small refusal quietly unravelled into cutting everything: movies, Netflix, music with lyrics, even books.
- The Oreo cookie theory of media: how stories, like processed food, are engineered to override your body's own ability to say stop.
- What disconnecting from collective narratives costs you socially — and why that cost eventually starts to feel like the price of something precious.
- The dream that sent Melissa to Mongolia with a backpack and no plan — and what happened when she actually trusted it.
- What ten years without external noise has proven: that the guidance was always inside, not in the next article, episode, or feed.
- Intuitive sovereignty: what it means to source your decisions from your own signal rather than the stories you've been handed.
